Advisory for the prevention of the spread of Leptospira pathogens
The following points needs to be considered
- The suspected animal should be isolated from the health animals and should be treated.
- The animal handler or those in contact with potentially infected animals, their tissues or secretions; or the contaminated water or soil, should wear protective clothing and footwear.
- Ensure cuts and skin abrasions are covered by watertight dressings and encourage frequent hand washing during exposure to high risk settings or environments.
- The risk of acquiring leptospirosis can be greatly reduced by not swimming or wading in water that might be contaminated with animal urine, or eliminating contact with potentially infected animals.
- Implement rodent control measures around homes, outbuildings and other areas attracting rodents, e.g. grain or animal feed stores and refuse disposal areas.
- Regular cleaning and disinfection of the animal sheds with Quaternary ammonium compound, Bleach (Sodium hypochlorite), Potassium peroxymonosulfate
- Milk should be boiled before consumption.
- The carcass should be disposed properly either by burial or incineration.
